5 Best Holiday Mocktails for a Sober Holiday Party
One of the best ways to stay sober during the holiday season is to be proactive with planning sober parties and activities. If it’s too tempting to spend time around family and friends who will be drinking, you might need to schedule other social events that fit your sober goals.
Planning a sober party can be a great way to have fun with like-minded friends, without the pressure of drinking a soda while everyone else has alcohol in hand. If you are going to schedule a sober party, then make sure to list clear guidelines on the invitation that no alcohol is allowed. At the same time, it is important to provide tasty food and non-alcoholic drinks so that everyone can enjoy the event.
Here are a few drink ideas that you can serve at your sober party:
Cinnamon Grapefruit Soda
- 2 TBSP grapefruit peel zest
- 1/2 cup coconut sugar
- 1 tsp turmeric powder (or 1 TBSP fresh turmeric, chopped)
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup grapefruit juice
- 1 cup soda water
In a mortar and pestle (or a small bowl with a mallet or spoon), add the grapefruit zest, sugar, and turmeric. Smash the ingredients together to release the oils from the grapefruit and turmeric.
Place in a pot, add the water. Turn the temperature to low and simmer for 10 minutes. The sugar should be dissolved, and you will see that the mixture has thickened. Allow the syrup to cool before using a fine, mesh strainer to remove the pulp.
In a glass, mix 2 tablespoons of the syrup with the grapefruit juice, soda water, and ice. Stir and serve immediately.
Pear Cider with Vanilla and Ginger
- 2 pears, chopped
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
- 1-inch ginger root, peel removed and chopped
- 1/2 tsp pure maple syrup
- Splash of vanilla extract
Combine the pears, water, and ginger in a blender. Turn on high speed until it is blended down to a smooth puree. Strain the puree through a fine, mesh strainer, using a spoon to push the puree and squeeze out remaining juice. Heat using a medium-low temperature. Stir in the lemon juice, vanilla extract, and maple syrup before serving.
Ginger Blueberry Spritzer
- ½ cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
- 1 TBSP sugar
- 1 TBSP ginger, minced
- 1 – 2 TBSP fresh lemon juice, to taste
- 1 cup sparkling apple cider, chilled
- 1 cup blueberry juice, chilled
Combine the blueberries, sugar, ginger, and lemon juice. Mash them together or process in a blender or food processor. Allow the puree to sit for 15 minutes before removing the pulp using a fine, mesh strainer.
Mix the extracted juice with the sparkling apple cider and blueberry juice. Serve immediately.
- 3 cups pear juice
- 2 oranges, sliced
- 2 apples, sliced
- 2 pears, sliced
- Seeds of 1 pomegranate
- 3 star anises
- 3 sticks of cinnamon
- 6 ginger slices
- 5 cloves, whole
- 1 tsp peppercorn
- 2 cups sparkling water, chilled
Add all ingredients, except the sparkling water, into a pitcher and store in the fridge for a minimum of 5 hours. For best results, prepare the mixture the day before the event so the sangria can soak in the fridge overnight. When you are ready to serve the drinks, mix in sparkling water and serve immediately.
Spiced Cranberry Tea
- 4 cups water
- 3 ounces cranberries, fresh or frozen
- Juice of 1 large lemon
- 1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and grated
- 2 tea bags, black tea or Roobios for a caffeine-free drink
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 2 TBSP dried goji berries
- 1 – 2 tsp raw honey, to taste
Add all ingredients except the tea bags and honey in a sauce pot. Bring the combination to a boil and allow it to simmer for 20 minutes. Turn off the heat and seep the tea bags for 5 minutes. Strain and serve with honey added to taste.
Optional: this tea can be served cold. Place the strained mixture on the counter until it reaches room temperature, then store in the fridge for a few hours to cool. Mix it with sparkling water and honey to taste.
