Solutions for People In Recovery During Self-Isolation

Self-isolation is the topic we are all talking about today, so we figured we would chime in on ‘life in self-isolation‘ with tips for people in recovery to help stay positive and on track.

During this self-isolation period, we all need to do our part in order to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus and the COVID-19 disease. A pandemic is stressful for everyone, but it can be especially difficult for people in recovery.

How can we stay emotionally healthy during self-isolation?

While we are in self-isolation or practicing ‘social distancing’, we need to come up with ways to stay in touch with our community – especially our fellowships. A common saying in the recovery community is, “The opposite of addiction isn’t sobriety, it’s CONNECTION.”

For recovering addicts, anxiety about COVID-19 can have a “triggering effect” that can lead to relapse. You definitely don’t want to compound any problems you might have with a relapse!

Alcohol and drugs kill more people daily than most diseases. This is why Aurora Recovery Centre has made sure they have all the necessary procedures in place to minimize the risk of Coronavirus.

Only rely on, and share from, credible sources such as the CDC & the World Health Organization: WHO. Don’t contribute to the misinformation by sharing unverified information or news by media conspiracy theorists like the Fox News Opinion Anchors. There are lots of ridiculous stories coming out about the Coronavirus.

Ignore claims of cures. They’re not true. Silver will NOT cure COVID-19 or the Coronavirus! There are all kinds of conspiracy theories on Social Media! One Twitter user shared an image that went viral online of a claim that Coronavirus can be cured by cocaine. That is 100% FALSE AND HARMFUL!

The scammers have jumped on the bandwagon too! Remember, the CDC, the WHO and credible media sources will let you know when there’s a vaccine! No doctor will come to your door, phone, email or text you asking for money. Here’s a list of scams to be aware of.

You can also attend online meetings for Continuing Care at Aurora via zoom. Contact our Continuing Care specialist, and they will send you the info for calling in from your phone or computer.

Educate yourself on what the signs and symptoms are. Remember, more people recover from the COVID-19 disease than not.

Tools to manage our own stress and anxiety about the Coronavirus

  • Listen to your emotions, noticing any anxiety, sadness, anger, or detachment.
  • Listen to your body, noticing any change in appetite, new aches and pains, or feeling particularly hot or cool.
  • When you notice troubling symptoms, pause to care for your body and mind. If you become unable to manage or function well, seek the assistance of a professional.
  • Practice self-care.
  • Maintain your normal routines, including your normal hygiene regiment.
  • Connect with family and friends.
  • Eat well and stay active.
  • Get adequate rest.
  • Do enjoyable activities and favourite hobbies.
  • Employ coping skills that nurture your spirit, like mindfulness exercises or prayer.
  • Exercise.
  • Smile! Studies show that smiling can help boost your immune system!
  • Meditate.
  • Listen to AA workshops, literature and speaker tapes.
  • Listen to music. American actress, singer, songwriter, and producer Rita Wilson (and wife of superstar Tom Hanks) actually created a shared playlist on Spotify while her and her husband were in self-isolation called ‘Quarantunes
