Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment

At the Aurora Recovery Centre our programs will provide everyone the necessary tools to live the life they truly desire.

Addiction rarely travels alone. It is frequently accompanied by depression, anxiety disorders and other mental health concerns, some of which have been present long before the addiction showed itself.

Many people often use alcohol, behaviours or other mood-altering drugs to relieve symptoms of mental health conditions that have plagued their lives. It is nearly impossible to treat addiction without treating mental illness. In our facility, we recognize the need to holistically address co-occurring disorders alongside substance abuse issues in order to maximize addiction treatment success.

Perhaps you are suffering from another disorder that either has not been stabilized, or the alcohol and other drug use has destabilized any previous treatment you have received for it. Maybe your fear is giving up your “self-medication.” This is a completely valid fear, but Aurora has staff who are trained to work with you regarding symptoms of the co-occurring disorder you experience. They have the expertise to know when to access a specialist specific to your other disorders, as symptoms may present themselves when you become abstinent from alcohol, behaviours or other addictive drugs.

Co-Occurring Disorders in Addiction Treatment

Co-occurring disorders are an important aspect of addiction recovery. Identifying any co-occurring disorders present within an individual before they begin their treatment will aid their recovery. Many people are genetically predisposed to mental health conditions that can, if left undiagnosed, lead the person to develop a serious addiction to drugs and alcohol in an attempt to self-medicate. Self-medicating any mental health issue is dangerous as your body adjusts to two different types of chemical stimuli that can lead to more serious medical health issues.

Addiction and Mental Illness

Addiction can also lead to the development of mental health disorders, after years of uncontrolled substance abuse; this is the catch-22 involved in the complicated dance between addiction and mental health conditions. A person may already have a preexisting mental health condition before developing an addiction, or they could develop the mental health condition as a result of excessive drinking or drug use.

Adding more depressants to your system, like drugs, alcohol and addictive behaviours, may increase depressive feelings over time and can lead to a combination of serious side effects such as thoughts of suicide. We understand that when someone is left with an undiagnosed mental health condition, they may feel afraid, alone and confused. At Aurora, we stress the need for co-occurring disorder screenings so that we fully integrate the right treatments for you. Should you require treatment of co-occurring disorders, we have the tools, staff and/or specialists to help you through recovery.
As you engage in your addiction treatment program, our goal is to mitigate as many roadblocks as possible. The specialized experts Aurora accesses on your behalf have been vetted to meet our standards. They are a select group who have the education, training, and experience to provide you with excellent care within the specialty you require.

There is much stigma that comes with addiction and mental health conditions, and many people don’t believe that they could be affected. However, according to the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse in Switzerland, over 450 million people all over the world are affected with a mental health condition. Mental health disorders are common and many go unnoticed until the symptoms become unmanageable. We understand that it can be overwhelming and scary to be labeled with a mental illness, but it can be successfully managed with effective counseling, therapy and treatment.

To successfully treat addiction with a co-occurring mental health disorder, it’s important that you treat both; otherwise, any treatment will not be successful. Aurora offers compassionate care that puts every client first, because our clients are the reason we are here.
