Phillips puts face on addiction, recovery at outdoor festival
Aurora Recovery Centre and St.Rapheal Wellness Centre partenered together to organize the event, along with a long list of other organizations. The event celebrated recovery from substance use and addiction, helped end the societal stigma and offered hope. It also lent an understanding and support for people who are affected by substance use.
“Mackenzie Phillips has made it her life’s mission to put a face on addiction and recovery.
“It’s to say, I’m a addict and this is what we look like,” said the actor and activist who took her message of hope to Recovery Day Winnipeg, a free all-day outdoor festival Saturday at The Forks. “What do you have to say about that now? We do recover. We are amazingly dedicated employees and friends. We run towards danger, not away from it if we’re sober.”
Sponsored by the Aurora Recovery Centre and St. Raphael Wellness Centre, the event was created to celebrate recovery and to rally Winnipeggers to tackle the stigma surrounding addictions and mental health issues. Recovery Day Winnipeg 2019 is a part of the National Faces and Voices of Recovery month in September, and featured live entertainment headlined by former Swollen Members band member Manchild along with stories of people in recovery.
As well, there was a free kids’ zone and fit zone, which included light saber duels, martial arts demos, face painting, boot-camp and yoga.
“I hope what people take from my talk is that we do recover,” said Phillips, the star of One Day At A Time and Orange Is The New Black and keynote speaker for Saturday’s event. “There is a solution and part of my mission is to chip away at the stigma surrounding not only being someone who’s in active addiction but being someone who’s in recovery. That’s even stigmatized and that makes me crazy.”
