What is the right treatment for addiction treatment? Public verses Private Treatment

Deciding to get help for an addiction to alcohol or drugs is a very important decision. Whether you’re seeking addiction treatment for yourself or a loved one, finding the right treatment is key.

Even though Canada prides itself for its free healthcare, finding government-run treatment options means that problems often occur with accessibility. So, it makes you ask, which addiction treatment option should you pursue? Public or private?

In this article, we will go over the differences between public and private, while also addressing the pros and cons of each.

Public Addiction Treatment

What is public addiction treatment?

Public addiction treatment is typically funded by the government. Treatment programs include medical and non-medical detox, outpatient programs, counselling, and therapy. Most public treatment centers typically don’t cost anything because it is covered by Manitoba Health. Public treatment is also offered through non-profit organizations that partner with the government to provide these services as well. For non-profit residential treatment organizations, there tends to be a fee for rent that is about $400 to $500 per month. Patients also pitch in on their groceries/food, which is roughly $100 per month. These organizations typically allow people to stay there for about a year. Outpatient services ask for donations, which can be as little as $10 per month.

Now, in Manitoba getting to a hospital or emergency room is easy, but wait times are at quite long. However, getting into a residential public rehab center is a much different story.

According to a report by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, between 2014 and 2015, a total of 150,222 people across Canada accessed publicly-funded substance use treatment services. The report states that in that year 9,626 Manitobans accessed publicly-funded treatment services. Ninety two percent of these people received non-residential treatment. This means that people received treatment through outpatient centers, counselling, detox, or by community groups. Meanwhile, only a mere eight percent attended public residential centers, which are where people stay at a center to do counselling, therapy, detox, and other programs to get sober. Residential programs range in how long people can attend.

How long does it take to get public addiction treatment in Manitoba?

Between 2017 and 2018, wait times skyrocketed for addiction treatment compared to previous years. On average, men waited 52 days in Manitoba, while women waited a whopping 206 days. The previous year men waited an average of 45 days and women waited 195 days. These long wait times can be devastating to an addict and their loved ones due to the risk of overdose and other potential dangers or injuries.

Apart from long wait times for public treatments, the quality and range of services is all over the map. Most public addiction rehab facilities in the province don’t offer highly personalized addiction treatment that some people require because they have standardized programs that serve as many people as possible.

Public substance treatment programs do provide evidence-based medical care, therapy, medical and non-medical detox, and sober living, but not one public addictions treatment center in Manitoba has all of these services in one place (at the time of this article being published).

There are several non-medical and medical detox centers in Manitoba; however, these centers must refer people to different programs to work on staying sober. Due to a lack of funding, these recommended government funded/non-profit organizations don’t have the ability to provide in-depth programming.

Trained therapists and other professionals face much pressure because of the number of patients they attend to. They only have a limited time to treat people due to strict hours and availability. Consequently, many public facilities are over worked, unable to create or update programming, and must refer people to even more services, which are not available at one single facility.

There is also no immediate outside aftercare, commonly called continuing care, provided after a government addictions rehab program. Aftercare is a vital ingredient for a successful recovery. There are helpful community groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous; however, they might not be suitable for everyone.

Private Addictions Treatment

Although the cost for private rehab centers varies and can be comparatively expensive to free, they offer a safer, more in-depth personalized and evidence-based treatment. On top of that, while it takes months for a spot to open in a public substance rehab facility, private addictions treatment clinics will have one almost immediately available.

Staff at these facilities are highly experienced and qualified. Thus, they execute personalized and customized programs and therapy for their members.

Private substance treatment centers don’t address addiction as strictly a medical issue. For example, Aurora Recovery Centre evaluates the emotional, mental, and physical causes and effects of addiction, since addictions to substances are caused by underlying mental health issues. Knowing the root causes of addiction allows people to take the first steps to their recovery.

This assessment starts when a member enters the center. Each member goes through 24/7 medical detox, are given two counsellors, medication, and their personalized plans before they start participating in the center’s programs.

Treatment Programming is comprised of different traditional therapies, along with adjunctive therapies, which is a big part of treatment.

These activities include art therapy, health and wellness activities, behavioral therapy, spiritual teachings, yoga, etc.

Keep in mind that the above programs, therapies and activities are specific to Aurora Recovery Centre, and not all private addiction treatment centres offer the same services, or same level of services, that Aurora offers.

Activities like art therapy also shows that private clinics provide a more holistic approach, which has proven higher success rates. Typically, private rehab programs have above 90 percent success rates compared to outpatient programs which are about 35 percent, according to a study by John’s Hopkins University.

Another advantage of private addiction rehab is the personalized and custom treatment plans. While public centers help each individual, the large number of patients means there is a standardized approach, and substance addictions are not one size fits all.

At independent residential addiction centers, there are more options than the 12-step method. This means someone’s detox and recovery is customized to that person’s specific needs and struggles. Private facilities spend more time updating and tweaking these programs as well. These plans include curated dietary plans, rooms, fitness programs, therapy and counselling, art supplies, books, and more for the patient.

Private organizations also likely provide aftercare once someone has completed their stay. Aftercare guides people through their recovery. Continuing care also gives an addict and their loved ones more support by having continuing therapy sessions, sponsors, workshops, and attending meetings.

At Aurora Recovery Centre, our continuing care program allows members to see the positive outcome of treatment and keep members connected while in recovery.
