Eating DisordersEating Disorders treatments we provide in Winnipeg and throughout Manitoba
When someone is suffering from an eating disorder, it is common for the affected person to use it as a means of taking control of his or her life. Common signs of an eating disorder often include obsessive calorie counting, excessive exercise, and restrictive eating habits.
Eating disorders are not always related to food. The affected person may have distorted views of body image or a fear of weight gain, but those are not always the main symptoms. He or she may also suffer from anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, or substance abuse. External factors like cultural body weight ideals and fashion can also affect people subconsciously, to the point of developing disorders like anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.
The symptoms of certain eating disorders can be fatal if the disorder is left untreated. Fortunately, an eating disorder is a very treatable type of mental illness. In order to get on the path to recovery, the affected person must first recognize they have an eating disorder. This is not an easy process, and it cannot be forced, but with a healthy support system in place, it is very possible to recover.
