6 Common and Uncommon Signs Of An Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety isn’t always obvious. Millions are plagued with anxious thinking, unaware that they are living with symptoms of anxiety. Here are seven common and less common signs of anxiety.

  1. Anxious Thoughts and Worry: Anxiety isn’t just a sudden onset of fear. Consistent thoughts of worry and small anxiety about every day situations is also a symptom of anxiety. Feeling worried about a slew of things out of one’s control for days weeks, or months at a time is a sign of anxiety.
  2. Fear: We all have fears both rational and irrational. For example, when we take a  test we might be fearful of failing it. For those who have anxiety, the fear goes beyond what makes sense. Failing that test could mean a domino effect of catastrophic events, creating an overwhelming sense of anxiety. Catastrophic thinking about normal fears is common characteristic of anxiety.
  3. PTSD: Remember that one time you were in front of the whole school and had to give an answer you couldn’t remember?  You looked around the room, eyes darting from side to side, sweat dripping down your face? As an adult, you have nightmares about his moment, constantly ruminating about how devastating it was. Anxiety isn’t always caused by the events which are yet to come but can instead be caused by events which have already happened in the past.
  4. Acting Out: Dealing with anxious thoughts can be a struggle without the proper coping mechanisms and understanding of how anxiety works. Many feel a need to escape their own minds, inspiring compulsive and often reckless behavior.
  5. Stomach Problems: Experiencing an upset stomach is not uncommon with anxiety. Butterflies before having to perform is relatively normal for anyone who experiences a bit of nerves. Ongoing problems with constipation or diarrhea is less common and attributed to an anxiety disorder.
  6. Insomnia: Loop thinking, catastrophic thinking, and rumination can keep someone up at night. Practices like mindfulness and meditation help to slow down anxious thinking and help create a deeper state of sleep.
