Arc Counselling - Winnipeg, MBAddiction Rehabilitation
WHAT IS ARC COUNSELLING?
Two common forms of addiction treatment are residential and individual, couples and family counselling and therapy sessions in an office-like setting.. Residential participants live, and receive intensive individualized group and one-on-one counselling within the residential facility. Program lengths generally range from 30 to 90 days. Residential treatment is intended to provide a safe and controlled environment. Availability, the time commitment required and higher cost can be barriers for individuals to avail themselves of this alternative.
Arc Counselling offers day, evening and weekend addiction treatment programs that are more accessible to individuals and their loved ones struggling with addiction. This is conducive to participants working or in school full or part time can still receive treatment. We also offer counselling, therapy and group sessions to families and significant others to help create a positive and supportive environment at home whether the addict is still using or not.

ARC COUNSELLING PROGRAMS:
Comprehensive Addiction Treatment (CAT)
The Comprehensive Addiction Treatment Program is designed for adults who want to live a clean and sober life but aren’t able to participate in residential treatment, like Aurora’s facility in Gimli. To participate in the program, members are expected to be abstinent, or on a managed taper program to become abstinent.
The process begins with a formal assessment resulting in an individualized treatment plan. Members participate in three group therapy sessions and one individual counselling session per week. The twelve-week program can vary in length depending on an individual’s needs. We encourage members to invite a spouse or significant other to attend the weekly Monday evening Family Program.
CAT provides a safe, professional, and confidential setting where members can address any physical, emotional, social, mental, and spiritual issues that underlie their addiction. Our clinicians are experienced in helping members manage co-occurring mental health issues related to substance abuse.
Additional individual, couples, and family counseling programs and services are also available.
The CAT Group Therapy Sessions are conducted as follows:
Monday: 6:00pm — 9:00pm
Tuesday: 6:00pm — 8:00pm
Thursday: 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Group programming includes educational presentations and group therapy sessions. We often require written goal work, reading activities, and 12 step assignments including in-session and take home tasks. An important part of a member’s treatment planning is identifying self-defeating patterns that contribute to a substance use disorder. We devote a significant amount of time addressing relapse prevention in early recovery by advising members on how to understand and manage their urges, cravings, and feelings. By addressing unresolved family and relationship issues members are helped to prevent relapse and better connect with others.
Random breathalyzer analysis and/or urinalysis testing is another means of maintaining accountability and preventing relapse.
Arc Family 3-day Workshop
Substance abuse disorders can cause profound harm well beyond the addict’s life. The effects of addiction can cause emotional and psychological stress on family members and significant others. The Arc Family Program provides structured assistance for adults affected by a loved one’s struggle with addiction.
The purpose of the Arc Family Program is to educate family members, significant others and friends about the behavioral and biological factors of addiction. Our professional counsellors and therapists facilitate a constructive learning environment conducive to thoughtful, respectful, and caring interactions.
The time-limited structure of the workshop involves extensive group programming over a three-day period as follows:
Thursdays: 1:00pm – 6:00pm
Fridays: 9:00am – 5:00pm
Saturdays: 9:00am – 2:00pm
Prior to the programming, participants meet with a counsellor to complete an Orientation Session, either in person or by video conference.
The content includes educational activities related to :
- Addictive illness
- 12-step philosophies
- Family and relational dynamics
- Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) issues
- Self-defeating patterns in relationships
- Coping strategies
- Stage I and II Recovery concepts
Through the process, participants work to overcome the challenges of a loved one’s addiction, learn to set healthy boundaries, and rebuild relationships.
After completing the workshop, participants have a follow up one-on-one counselling session to discuss any challenges they experience. Arc Family Program participants who desire additional individual, group, couples or family counselling with Arc counsellors, therapists, or programs, may do so at an additional cost.
Arc Family 6-week Course
Substance use disorders and other addictive illnesses are highly treatable that families may have difficulty understanding. We offer the 6-week course to families and significant others who want to learn more about the effects of their loved one’s addiction and provide the tools that allow them to live a full and happy life, whether the addict in their life has embraced recovery or not.
The Arc Family Course consists of 3-hour group therapy sessions on Monday evenings from 6pm to 9pm. Prior to the program, individuals meet with an ARC counsellor to complete an Intake and Orientation session, either in-person or by video conference.
Sessions cover a wide array of topics and information such as:
- Understanding and defining addiction and recovery for both addicts and their loved ones
- Stage I and Stage II recovery concepts
- Physical, mental, social, and spiritual health issues with chemical addiction and recovery
- Healthy vs. unhealthy coping, and effective communication strategies in damaged family relationships
- Self-care, boundaries, and maintaining balance with family, significant others, and friends
- 12 step education (relative to Al-Anon / Alcoholics Anonymous / Narcotics Anonymous philosophies)
- Codependency and Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) issues
- Self-defeating patterns in relationships
- Shame, guilt, anger, sadness, grief, loss, and regret
- Understanding relapse and relapse prevention issues for both addicts and their loved ones
Through the process, participants work to overcome the challenges of their addiction, learn to set healthier boundaries for self-care, and rebuild relationships harmed by the impact of disease.
Upon completion, each participant will have an individual follow-up counselling session to address any challenges they may have encountered through group sessions. Arc Family participants who desire additional individual, group, couples, or family counselling with Arc counsellors and therapists may do so at an additional cost.
